Location
Our country estate with twelve vacation apartments is located in the heart of the Cilento and Valle di Diano National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, around 125 km south of Naples. It is situated on a hillside between the coastal town of St. Maria di Castellabate and the medieval mountain village of Castellabate.
A’ Cràpa Mangia itself is also a bit like a small village. Traveling together while living separately is wonderfully possible in our apartments of different sizes. Communal areas and private living areas ensure that you can spend your stay with or next to each other as you wish. In St. Maria di Castellabate you will find the nearest beach, restaurants, shops and bars. You can reach the coastal town in just a few minutes by car or 15 minutes on foot. The mountain village of Castellabate, with its winding alleyways and hidden courtyards, is around 25 minutes’ walk uphill. It was awarded the 2015 prize for the most beautiful villages in Italy.
From the estate, you can gaze out over the entire bay of Santa Maria di Castellabate, the Gulf of Salerno and the Amalfi Coast. In the distance, you can spot the island of Capri and, on a clear day, Ischia. In any case, the sunsets are fiery red.
Courtyard bar
You’ve just gotten up and realize that there’s no coffee left, or you are simply looking for the right game or a good travel guide to plan your upcoming hike? In our small courtyard bar, you will find everything you need for self-service – in addition to the apartment equipment – so that you can stay well supplied and don’t have to leave A’ Cràpa Mangia so quickly. There are also freshly laid eggs from our hens, fragrant cornetti, crispy bread rolls and ciabatta from the village bakery, which you can pick up here every morning to order. And of course our favorite products such as olive oil, tomato sugo, limoncello and seasonal jams. So you can still taste like you’re on vacation in Cilento when you get home.
Fruits and fields
Fruit tastes best straight from the tree. Depending on the season, you will discover white figs, apricots, cherries, pomegranates, myrtle berries and citrus fruits on the grounds – as well as Mediterranean herb beds. Just go for it!
When the farmers in Cilento used to inquire about your health, they would ask:
“Mangia a’ cràpa?”, literally translated as “Does the goat eat?”.
The answer “A’ cràpa mangia!” meant “We’re fine!”.
And why
the goat?
History
The estate was built in the 17th century by the noble Perotti family as a supply farm and summer residence. When we fell in love with it at the end of the 1990s, the remains of the former barn, the coach house and the bakery building were still standing next to the main building. Instead of all the ruins, we saw a vision. And it was stronger than any reservations. With a large dose of naivety, unshakeable optimism and, above all, thanks to the professional help of our local neighbors, we were able to make our dream come true piece by piece over the following years.
